Governments’ struggle with misinformation: Sweden’s example

In September last year, in Sweden were held elections. Since the beginning of the electoral process, several misinformation campaigns have been identified in countries such as the USA, France and Ukraine. For this reason, Sweden has decides to arm itself better in order to bear that wave of misinformation but also the outside influence.


Thus, in January 2018, the Swedish government tightened the measures to counter misinformation and delegated the Swedish Agency for Emergency Situations to develop a strategy. The agency also had the task of instructing all the state institutions in order to detect the sources of misinformation and to deal with them. The previous government of Sweden raised the risk level of misinformation and elaborated for the students  new teaching materials about fake news and propaganda. Later, Sweden participated in several international actions, regarding the fight against misinformation.

It is not difficult to see how all these actions influenced the evolution of Sweden. During the last election, were not detected significant misinformation campaign.  A few days before the elections, the Emergency Situations Agency announced publicly that no sign of deliberate misinformation was identified.
